Scott Bawinkel – Adjutant, McHenry County Detachment, Marine Corps League
From the flight lines of Japan to the parade grounds of McHenry County, Scott Bawinkel has dedicated his life to service — to his country, his fellow Marines, and his community.
Scott served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1981 to 1990, specializing as an Aircraft Avionics and Electronic Countermeasures Technician (MOS 6482). His technical expertise and dedication to mission readiness took him around the world — serving with all four Marine Aircraft Wings and the 4th Marine Division.
His most memorable and rewarding tour was with Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Iwakuni, Japan, where he deployed constantly in support of Marine and Navy fighter and attack squadrons. Over three and a half years, he provided critical avionics support for aircraft including the F-4, A-4, A-6, A-7, EA-6B, and F/A-18. Whether living out of tents in the cold hills of Korea or turning wrenches on the flight line in the heat of the Philippines, Scott served with pride and purpose. His deployments spanned Okinawa, Japan; NAS Cubi Point in the Philippines; Yechon and Taegu in South Korea; and beyond, contributing directly to the operational strength and readiness of Marine aviation. By the end of his active duty, he had traveled to more than 30 countries, embodying the spirit of adventure and commitment that defines Marines around the globe.
After his service, Scott continued his career in the private sector and is currently a Project Manager with Motorola in Schaumburg, Illinois, where he applies the same precision, reliability, and leadership he learned in uniform.
Scott joined the McHenry County Detachment of the Marine Corps League nearly two decades ago, after meeting fellow Marines at a Heart of a Marine Foundation golf outing. Reconnecting with that sense of brotherhood inspired him to become a member, and from the moment he attended his first meeting — welcomed by Marines like Ed Peters and Mike Ruffner — he knew he was home again. When he faced job loss in 2011, it was that same network of Marines who stepped forward to help him get back on his feet, a testament to the “Marines Helping Marines” creed that guides our Detachment.
Throughout his time with the League, Scott has served faithfully as Adjutant and Junior Vice Commandant under seven Commandants. His steady hand, attention to detail, and unwavering loyalty have made him an integral part of the Detachment’s leadership. Always willing to lend a hand, Scott supports fundraisers, parades, color guards, funeral details, and community outreach efforts, and when time allows, he still finds his way to a Marine Corps pistol shoot — keeping the skills sharp and the camaraderie alive.
Scott’s story reflects what the Marine Corps League stands for: commitment beyond the uniform, leadership through service, and a lifelong devotion to those who served.
