Gunnery Sergeant Mike Ruffner, USMC (Ret.), has devoted his life to service—first to his country as a Marine, and then to his fellow veterans and community. A founding member of the McHenry County Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Mike has been a driving force in strengthening veteran support networks across Illinois.

During his distinguished career in the Marine Corps, Mike exemplified the values of honor, courage, and commitment. After retirement, he continued to serve as a Retired Veterans Employment Representative and Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with the Illinois Department of Employment Security, helping countless veterans transition successfully into civilian life.

Mike’s leadership has extended across numerous organizations. He has served as Commandant of both the Department of Illinois and the McHenry County Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Commander of AMVETS Post 269, and President of the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Chicago. His dedication also includes past service as Chairman of the McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission, Coordinator for the Toys for Tots program, and board member for veteran-focused nonprofits such as New Horizon Transitional Living Services and the Heart of a Marine Foundation.

Through decades of unwavering service, Mike has become a respected leader, mentor, and advocate. His work continues to inspire Marines, veterans, and community members alike, embodying the Marine Corps League motto: Once a Marine, Always a Marine.
